Chinatown News 華埠新聞 (1953-1996)

About "Chinatown News" The magazine originally titled "Chinatown" (華埠) was an English-language periodical launched in Vancouver, BC, in September 1953. Published by Publicity Bureau Ltd. (Chung Hua 中華出版社) and owned by Roy Mah, the title was changed to "Chinatown News" (華埠新聞) in September 1956 (ISSN: 0009-4501). It retained this name until its final issue in 1996. "Chinatown News" is recognized as one of the most established and influential magazines of its kind, focusing on community identity, local affairs, and issues vital to Chinese Canadians. Because the magazine targeted younger, English-speaking generations of Chinese descent in North America, it also provided regular coverage of major Chinese communities in Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary, San Francisco, Honolulu, and New York. As a pioneering publication, it documented the significant achievements and sophisticated lifestyle of the Chinese diaspora. By chronicling everything from immigration and civil rights to social clubs and community events, the magazine made lasting contributions to the discourse that led to the Canadian Multiculturalism Act (1988).
